Proud to become B Corp Certified

Proud to be a Certified B Corp.

B Corp is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee. Certified B Corporations™ redefine success in business and compete with each other not to be the best in the world, but the best  for the world.

In May 2016 my brand Sapience Financial & Investment Services became a proud Certified B Corp joining a global community and movement of 1700 businesses, commitment to using business as a force for good in the world. B Corp (Benefit Corporation) is an international standard that measures the impact of purpose-driven businesses who are committed to using business to solve many of the worlds meaningful problems.

To become and maintain a B Corp certification, each business is independently assessed and certified by B Lab, a global non-profit organisation with offices in the United States, Europe, South America, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The assessment is specified for each industry type and benchmarks 5 stringent areas of:

  • Environment
  • Workers
  • Customers
  • Community
  • Governance

Every two years each member business is required to re-certify to maintain the certification. The certification is a private certification issued to for-profit companies by B Lab.

Why spend the time and effort to gain a B Corp Certification?

We believe that without a purpose and an expressed passion, nothing is sustainable, both personally and professionally.

It's part of what Maslow describes as our higher needs as individuals

Maslow's highest hierarchy of needs describes 'the highest need is for a purpose beyond ourselves' He called it self-actualisation or even towards transcendence, but we just call it, 'doing well and doing good'.

It's who we are

'Because everyone deserves a fair go'. For my team at Sapience Financial and Investment Services, using business as a force for good has always been part of our DNA. We've been a proud brand ambassador for the Australian microfinance charity Opportunity International Australia for a number of years and regularly see the value and extraordinary results that targeted philanthropy can product to help the extreme poor in developing countries.

Applying a business approach to solving problems and getting stuff done,  means that many of the communities meaningful problems can be solved more efficiently and effectively. Taking the time to work through the B Corp. assessment became for us a way to quantify impact we want to see in the greater community and benchmark us against an external standard for which we’re happy to be held accountable.

differential from prentders notes

We are in the early stages of a global culture shift that is transforming our vision of the purpose of business from a late 20th century view that it is to maximize value for shareholders to a 21st century view that the purpose of business is to maximize value for society.
Significantly, this transition is being driven by market-based activism, not by government intervention. Rather than simply debating the role of government in the economy, people are taking action to harness the power of business to solve society’s greatest challenges. Business—what we create, where we work, where we shop, what we buy, who we invest in—has become a source of identity and purpose.
The important question is not whether or not the culture is shifting, but “what can we do to increase the chance that this culture shift is meaningful and lasting?” - Impact governance and management: Fulfilling the promise of capitalism to achieve a shared and durable prosperity. How do you recognise a B Corp?

The seal of the Certified B CorpAll B Corps are certified to show the B Corp seal of certification. The B Corporation seal has been designed to represent what Inc. Magazine called “the highest standard for socially responsible business.” As the New York Times said, “B Corp provides what is lacking elsewhere: proof ” that the company using it is a recognized leader.

Where do I find other B Corps?

There is an online database of B Corps here.

If you become a client of my company Sapience Financial Investment Services or one of our speciality brands, just by making a decision where to place your business, you'll be participating in making a sustainable difference to the community and using small business as a force for good.
